A couple weekends ago, we went to a surprise birthday party. As we all huddled together, waiting for the guest of honor to arrive, my husbanders leaned over and asked me if I liked surprises. For those of you who don’t already know, we’ve been together about 12 years, so the question came as a surprise to me. “Shouldn’t he already know this about me?” I thought. Then, as I was beginning to answer the question, I thought to myself, “Do I like surprises?”
It is a tough question to answer. Do I like being surprised that my car doesn’t start in the morning? No. Do I like being surprised with a chocolate cake? Yes. Owing taxes? No. A refund? Yes! As I write this, Omar is hammering away at something downstairs that is a “surprise.” I have no idea what it is, but knowing him, it is something delightfully pragmatic.
The topic of surprises got me thinking about other surprises and my cooking cocktail of choice came to mind. It will probably come as a surprise for the readers out there that know me well — each of whom probably know that at the end the day, I reach for a glass of red wine, or if it’s a rough day, a Hendricks & Tonic (a splash of St. Germain wouldn’t hurt either).
Get me on a Saturday afternoon in kitchen though, and what will you find in my hand? Campari Orange. The color of a creamy strawberry orange starburst, a sultry bitterness and the hint of sweet, is perfect for cooking. Plus, Campari just sounds and looks sophisticated. Who doesn’t love that? It might even cleanse the palate after you taste what you cook. Surprised? Try it out.
I think it’s even better if you make it with a bottle of Campari from your father-in-law with “Egypt Air Duty Free” stuck right on the front of the bottle.
1/4 cup Campari (okay –so this is technically two drinks)
2/3 cup Orange juice (I use the Tropicana that I drink for breakfast)
Combine in your glass of choice, stir, and enjoy!
